While hiking the North Carolina side of the Great Smokey Mountain National Park along Hazel Creek near Fontana Dam I encountered a few fly fisherman. This particular fella was kind enough to invite me to join his group for a trout and cornbread dinner and an evening of wonderful conversations and laughter around a campfire in the back country. His hospitality is much appreciated and his modeling skills were outstanding.
This is among my top three favorite adventures. I anticipate several more pieces inspired by this hike through the last area annexed into the GSMNP. I did take the "shortcut" to the trailhead by driving the Dragon's Tail, Deal's Gap - unless you plan to cheat death on a motorcycle or in a sports car at 30 mph I would recommend driving through Maggie's Valley instead. Jeep Wrangler was built for incredible off-road adventures - not the Dragon's Tail. Then there was the boat ride across Fontana Lake to the trailhead.
This area is rich with history and folk lure - old and new
I marveled at all ways our mighty Mother Nature reclaims all that is hers when man walks away. Some of the structures are maintained but most are gone or in various states of disrepair.
