Bee Gum CCC Camp, GSMNP Campsite #71 on the Forney Creek Trail near Bryson City, North Carolina - Field Postcard, Watercolour on paper 4x6 Suitable for framing
This was the site of my first overnight backcountry camp. I painted this remaining tribute to all that had come before us to make these trails, these spaces that allow us to reconnect with the earth, then I crawled into my first tent as the thunder rolled and the rains fell. My budget appropriate tent leaked all night and I questioned my sanity as I lay in puddles of water and protected my watercolours more vehemently than my own person.
The next morning I awoke to see the sun shining thru tent walls that had, in my last memory, featured the art of lightning and I realized that God had great plans for me. Why else would he bring me through flood and lightning in a tent never meant for a night alone in the woods? It was an awakening to my faith and, thanks to my loving and concerned family, the last time I slept in a leaky tent.
