Oil on rough-sawn, live-edge wood.
Approximately 12 inches tall. Freestanding.
The wood came from my family's farm in northeast Indiana and was cut by my uncle, who spent an extraordinary amount of time cutting wood. Sometimes I think he heated with wood just so he'd have an excuse to cut more of it.
Years later, my Handler looked at this piece and thought it would be funny to paint a wood duck on wood.
He was right.
I began painting it around 2022, then carried it with me and tinkered with it for several years before finally calling it finished in 2025.
The chainsaw marks, rough edges, grain and irregular shape remain part of the piece. It isn't simply a painting on wood. The wood gets to remain itself.
I believe this wood duck inherited my tendency to wander. He has traveled all over the country with me before finally becoming what he was meant to be.
A wood duck from everywhere.
